Here's a better way to rig a swimming balao
quickly
Sunday, August 10, 2008
The balao -- usually called ballyhoo -- is a tropical forage fish that's a standard for
big-game trollers even in areas far from its native habitat. Balaos are usually rigged as skipping baits for
billfish, tunas, dolphin and wahoo, but can also be trolled more slowly and often more effectively as a swimming
bait.
Charles Fricke of Cudjoe Key, Fla., was in New Jersey last weekend to demonstrate his method
of quickly rigging a swimming balao. The standard method involves rigging an egg sinker under the balao's head, and
requires time and expertise. On the other hand, the Better Bait Systems curved lead head with two spikes going
through it can be fitted to a balao and secured with copper wire within seconds.
This new product is being sold only in Florida so far, but should soon be available here.
